Vertebrate development: The fast track to Nodal signalling
نویسنده
چکیده
The transcription factors Fast-1 and Mixer are important terminal components of Smad2-mediated TGF-beta signal transduction. Recent studies demonstrate that Fast-1 and Mixer play critical roles in the formation of endoderm and dorsal mesoderm in zebrafish.

Vertebrate Development: Taming the Nodal Waves
Recent results have provided evidence that regulatory loops operating in vertebrate embryos between the developmental signalling factors Nodal and Lefty may provide a real example of the kind of reaction-diffusion process long predicted to be a mechanism of pattern formation.
متن کاملDistinct Xenopus Nodal ligands sequentially induce mesendoderm and control gastrulation movements in parallel to the Wnt/PCP pathway.
The vertebrate body plan is established in two major steps. First, mesendoderm induction singles out prospective endoderm, mesoderm and ectoderm progenitors. Second, these progenitors are spatially rearranged during gastrulation through numerous and complex movements to give rise to an embryo comprising three concentric germ layers, polarised along dorsoventral, anteroposterior and left-right a...
متن کاملNodal signalling and the roles of the transcription factors SnR and Pitx2 in vertebrate left–right asymmetry
Left-specific mesodermal expression of the homeobox gene Pitx2 links a gastrula-stage intercellular signalling cascade to the later development of vertebrate left-right organ asymmetry through the Nodal signalling pathway [1] [2][3] [4][5] [6]. SnR (Drosophila snail-related), a gene conserved in vertebrates and encoding a zinc-finger protein, appears to function in a similar manner to Pitx2, bu...
متن کاملNodal signalling in Xenopus: the role of Xnr5 in left/right asymmetry and heart development
Nodal class TGF-β signalling molecules play essential roles in establishing the vertebrate body plan. In all vertebrates, nodal family members have specific waves of expression required for tissue specification and axis formation. In Xenopus laevis, six nodal genes are expressed before gastrulation, raising the question of whether they have specific roles or act redundantly with each other. Her...
متن کاملAraf kinase antagonizes Nodal-Smad2 activity in mesendoderm development by directly phosphorylating the Smad2 linker region
Smad2/3-mediated transforming growth factor β signalling and the Ras-Raf-Mek-Erk cascade have important roles in stem cell and development and tissue homeostasis. However, it remains unknown whether Raf kinases directly crosstalk with Smad2/3 signalling and how this would regulate embryonic development. Here we show that Araf antagonizes mesendoderm induction and patterning activity of Nodal/Sm...
